   WHAT WAS WRONG BEFORE ANY OF THIS. Every page declared

       --sans: "Avenir Next", "Helvetica Neue", -apple-system, sans-serif

   and Avenir Next ships with macOS and iOS and with nothing else. So on
   Windows, Android and Linux the whole stack fell through to whatever
   sans-serif happens to be. The design is carried by light weights and wide
   tracked capitals, which is exactly what a generic fallback destroys first —
   the app looked designed on the machine it was designed on, and ordinary
   everywhere else.

   EB GARAMOND is the face now, chosen by Josh from a specimen set in this
   product's own copy. It is a revival of the types Claude Garamont cut in
   Paris in the 1540s, which is about as old as a working text face gets, and
   it is the most readable old-style on the page at paragraph size. For a
   product whose whole argument is a record that outlives the company keeping
   it, a five-hundred-year-old letterform is not decoration.

   JOST STAYS, AND IS NOT DEAD WEIGHT. EB Garamond starts at weight 400; this
   interface leans on 200 and 300 for its tracked micro-labels, and asking a
   Garamond for 200 gets you 400 in a face with fine hairlines reversed out of
   near-black. So Jost remains as --ui for the small tracked capitals and the
   map labels, where a geometric sans is simply the better instrument. Two
   faces doing the two jobs each is better than one face doing both badly, and
   the pairing is old text against plain signage, which is what an atlas is.

   SELF-HOSTED, NOT LINKED. A <link> to fonts.googleapis.com would put a third
   party in the boot path of every page — the dependency we spent 11.2 MB
   removing from the old map engine. This is ~250 KB total from our own origin, and no
   request leaves the machine to render a headline.

   Both faces are SIL Open Font License. OFL-EBGaramond.txt and OFL-Jost.txt
   ship beside them, because the licence requires the text to travel with the
   font.
